I work at a facility that installs, configures, programs, and test server and network equipment and the rack mounted KVM just proves to be a pain to use, so we don't. The only negative aspect of needing hardware support is a fully functional KVM can be dropped. However, with the democratization of Chromebooks based on these chips and mobile devices, it will not. These switches can be installed in a rack port, along with other UPS systems and PDUs.
